How To Reach Ladakh

Flight

The quickest and simplest way to reach Ladakh is by air. It is also the only means of transport with year-round access to the place — exceptional circumstances, not withstanding. The only airport is located in the town of Leh, called the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport. Many domestic airlines offer regular flights to Leh, from Jammu, Srinagar, Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata and from other urban hubs across the country. These include Go Air, Indigo, Vistara, Spice Jet and Air India. While shorter routes such as Jammu or Delhi have direct flights, longer routes could sometimes have a single stop along the way, usually at Delhi. The Leh airport is also a military base, so expect a higher level of security. Airport is around 4 Km from Main City Center. Flight tickets can be cheap if booked well in advance. Find Cheapest Flight ticket to Leh Ladakh.

Road

Road travel is a popular means of getting to Ladakh, with spectacular views and adrenaline-rush moments promised along the way. The only catch is that the routes are only accessible during the months of May to October, while winter sees Ladakh cut off from most places outside. Also long journey via road is one more aspect you need to consider during planning. You can approach Leh either from Delhi, via Manali, Himachal Pradesh. Or else you can reach from Jammu OR Srinagar via Kargil.  A few buses are available for few months of summer, Check Here

Route 1: Delhi To Manali 12 -14 hr (519.4 km) via NH 44 | Manali To Leh 11-12 hr  (427.0 km) via NH 3
Route 2: Jammu To Srinagar 7-9 hr  (244.5 km) via NH 244A and NH 44 | Srinagar to Leh 11-12 hrs (418.3 km) via NH1

Train

You wouldn’t usually opt for train travel to Ladakh since the nearest station is located 700 km away in the town called Tawi. Stations like Chandigarh and Pathankot are the other closest options, but they are even further away. Even if you do choose to take a train from your departure city to any of these stations, you’ll have to hire a taxi, jeep or private vehicle to complete the rest of the journey — which could take up to three days. 1. *Leh Town:*
– In Leh, the main town of Ladakh, you should find mobile network coverage. Visit local telecom offices to get a local SIM card.
Sometimes the hotel can help arrange it too.

2. *Choose a Reliable Provider:*
– Opt for a telecom provider with better coverage in the region. Providers like  Airtel, and Jio are known for relatively better connectivity in Ladakh. All international traveler need to follow this approach as no prepaid sim of other Indian regions doesn’t work here.
– Also Consider getting a postpaid sim of the service providers mentioned above if you are planning to arrange for it before arrival as prepaid sims from other regions across the country fail to work in Ladakh. You can usually recharge it with a specific amount as needed.

3. *ID Proof and Photographs:*
– To get a local SIM card, you’ll typically need to provide a valid ID proof (passport, Aadhar card, etc.) and passport-sized photographs.

4. *Limited Connectivity in Remote Areas:*
– Be prepared for limited or no mobile network in some remote areas. Example; Nubra, Pangong, Tosmoriri, Hanle with No or limited network.

5. *Prepaid vs. Postpaid:*
– No prepaid sim of other Indian regions doesn’t work here.Consider getting a Local prepaid SIM card or postpaid sim from your home town for more flexibility. Prepaid sim can usually recharge with a specific amount as needed.

6. *Internet Connectivity :*
– Internet connectivity is generally better in Leh compared to more remote areas. Cybercafes and hotels with Wi-Fi are common in Leh. Less in Nubra, and Least in Pangong, Tsomoriri.

Remember to check the latest conditions and updates, as network coverage and services can change. Additionally, note that some areas in Ladakh may still lack reliable mobile network connectivity due to the challenging terrain.

1. *Cash is Essential:
– While Leh has ATMs, it’s crucial to carry a significant amount of Indian currency in cash. Many establishments, especially in remote areas, may not accept cards due to limited connectivity.

2. *Preferential Currency Exchange:*
– Exchange your currency to Indian Rupees before arriving in Ladakh. Leh has a few authorised currency exchange services but the availability may vary, and it’s prudent to be prepared.

3. *Inform Your Bank:*
– Inform your bank about your travel dates and destination to prevent any card-related disruptions. Some banks impose restrictions on card usage in specific regions.

4. *Emergency Currency:
– While INR is the primary currency, carrying a small amount of US dollars or Euros can be useful in emergencies or situations where certain guest house may accept it.

5 Mobile Wallets
– Mobile Wallets like Paytm and Google pay are becoming more widely accepted in the main city of Leh or in places while you have network connectivity and your bank registered mobile number is working – though remember network connectivity in most of the remote places still remain sparse.
– For international travelers it is advised to download the app called Wise Money Transfer as it a convenient way to transfer money online – at least inside the main city of Leh where internet facility is fairly decent.

Remember, staying prepared and informed about local conditions ensures a smoother financial experience during your travels in Ladakh.

COVID-19 Guidelines:
– Due to the ongoing global situation, it’s essential to check for any specific COVID-19 related travel restrictions or requirements imposed by the Indian government at time of your travel.

Please note that these requirements might change, and it’s recommended to consult the official government websites or contact us for the most up-to-date information before planning your trip.

Well, the experience was good and the team too.We joined them for Bramhatal trek, and they took well care from our... pickup point to drop. They did cover the pickup and drop in their expense, along with homestay for a small group and mule expenses for the trek. All in all, I'd say better to go with them if you have a group of more than 6 people.read more

Being my first trek, I was super vigilant in getting the best operator on board to help me with the preparation and the... overall organisation.I narrowed down on Rockyfeet after a lot of deliberation. It was indeed an excellent choice. Arnab and his team in doing a fabulous job.I felt that Rockyfeet was able to induce a personal touch with the participants which helped in making a tight bond amongst all.The overall organisation was immaculate in terms of guides (Mr. Lappu and Mr. Sonam), food (awesome cooks), porters (Lifeline of the trek), tenting facilities, equipments Etc.The group was well cared for during the entire trek. Rockyfeet has definitly proved my choise to be right and I shall recommend all to go ahead with the same. With Arnab, felt like being with my own brother. He comes in with immense knowledge and experiences to share. I do recomend that his knowledge be exploited to the fullest. He was extremely patient and cheerful in answering all my queries with his own personal experiences. I left Leh with a warm heart and new friends and am already planning on the next trek with Rockyfeet.Kudos Guys, you made my trip!Best Regards,Hiteshread more
